It's been several months since my last post; and I have been keeping busy - apparently to busy to blog! In September I found a job near Ottawa, and moved to the city a week later. Settled into an apartment downtown, and started to get my feet under the desk at work.

One way or the other, I'll be leaving Kingston in the next few weeks. With summer coming to an end, I've been making an effort to get out and appreciate some of Kingston's attractions and history. So here are the highlights of a walk around Queen's University and the old part of the city.

Toronto, Labour Day Weekend

For the last long weekend of the summer, A and I went to Toronto to catch up with some friends, family, and to see some of the sights.

We started out with a look around the John Street Roundhouse Park. This roundhouse was built by the Canadian Pacific Railway around 1930, and now has been partly converted into a brewery, furniture store, and railway museum. As a rail museum, it's still in its early stages, but shows a lot of potential.

Two years ago while looking for something to brighten the walls of my empty apartment, I came across a bin of posters being given away by (presumably) the geography department of the university. Being a fan of informative artwork, I stuck them on my walls, and have been studiously examining them ever since. To Wolfe Island for a Weekend Pub Lunch

Last Saturday we were promised some warm sunny weather, so I made plans with A. to head across on the ferry to Wolfe Island for lunch at the Wolfe Island Grill.

First, we waited for the bus to take us down town:

I've been looking after some tomato plants for the last few weeks. For a while I had great expectations of a fantastic crop of tomatoes, but they suffered several false starts as blossoms dropped off, or failed to develop. However, I am pleased to report that the first tomato has exceeded 1 cm in diameter; at which point I think it is safe to announce that I will be eating home grown tomatoes within the next couple of months.

Most of the snakes we came across slithered very quickly into the bushes. This one, however, stuck around and acted a bit more assertively: shaking its tail and making aggressive motions. The park rangers later identified it as a Milk Snake, and quite unusual to come across.

Thanks in part to a kind Christmas gift, A and I headed to Quebec City for a long weekend to check out Carnival, the largest festival of its kind, and now in its 57th year. It involves all manner of wintery activities and entertainment: here is a taster..

Christmas Holidays Part 2

For Christmas and a few days after, I stayed in Vancouver with A's family (including new nephew). Here we enjoyed the scenic west coast, and spent some with the family.

On one day we went into Vancouver city, where we found some more sights: float planes in the harbour, the Gas Town clock, busy streets and quiet back alleys.

For some fish and chips and ocean air, we spent an afternoon at Steveston, an old fishing and canning town on the mouth of the Fraser river.

For a few days before Christmas, A and I were in Victoria with some of my family. On one evening we had dinner at Butchart Gardens, and spent some time admiring the display of lights (they had a "Twelve Days of Christmas" theme):

Some of the other sights of Victoria were Craigdarroch Castle (home of 19th century coal baron Robert Dunsmuir), some knit graffiti, and views from Mt Tolmie.

Then off on the ferry to Pender Island, to stay at my Aunt's cabin for a day of games, food, drink, and catching up with family:

The last leg of this phase of the holiday was to take the ferry back to Vancouver to spend Christmas with A's family (coming up soon in Part 2!).

The first stop in my holiday was to spend a couple of days in the Lake District at an annual orchestra week. Despite being there only two days, and not playing anything, it was great to catch up with old friends, take in the scenery and listen to a bit of music.

Bluesfest

The Ottawa Bluesfest (bit of a misnomer, as you can hear everything from jazz to metal to African to country to prog-rock!) runs for about two weeks, and on Saturday I cashed in my birthday present and showed up with Andrea. Here are the (musical) highlights:

The first band we caught were the "Tony Silvestri Band", a bunch of teenagers from down the road; actually, they were very good!

"The Love Machine" are an Ottawa band who had everyone dancing!

Just before dinner; something a bit more relaxing... "That's The Spirit" !

The evening kicked off with Metric; a best-selling Canadian band.

And concluded with The Flaming Lips, an American rock band specializing in OTT theatrics, with a splash of anti-establishment hippy thrown in for good measure. All together now: focus your mind on transmitting signals of peace to the global leaders!!

Canoeing Algonquin Park

The Canada Day holiday on July 1st created a perfect four-day weekend for Andrea and I to do a little exploration of Algonquin Park, a vast network of lakes, rivers and trails in the Canadian Shield.

We I set out from Ottawa on Canada Day morning and got to the park in the early afternoon, so we found a hiking trail through the woods to a lookout above Cache Lake:

In the past the park has been a hive of industry and tourism, with logging, a major railway, and large hotels; now the forest has covered most of the signs - this was the bed of the railway:

We drove onwards into the park to find our first campsite, by the highway at Canisbay Lake:

On Friday our canoe adventure began at Canoe Lake. This is one of the busiest points in the park, with many people setting out on trips from here. It was also the favourite location of Canadian painter Tom Thomson, and the place where he met his end.

Given that we were concentrating on not doing likewise, there aren't many photos of the trip from Canoe Lake to our campsite on Tom Thomson Lake, but we did come across a loon family that consented to being photographed:

Prince Edward County

Prince Edward County is about an hour's drive down Lake Ontario. It's Ontario's newest wine region, and also home to many cheese factories, fine restaurants and art galleries.

Fort Henry was built by the British to protect Kingston, and the St Lawrence River against attack from the Americans during the war of 1812. It is now a national historic site, complete with reenactments, and its own guard.

Fort Henry Guard are not military - mostly local students chosen for their marching and drumming skills. Decked out in typical 1860s garb.

Montreal

Highlights from an Easter trip to Montreal:

Flags of Quebec and Montreal. (The Montreal flag has symbols of the four main cultures that initially made up the population: French, English, Scots and Irish.)

Place Jacques-Cartier, the centre of the old town, and a hive of activity on a sunny weekend evening.

Montreal's first skyscraper, The New York Life Insurance Building. Built in 1887 with sandstone imported from Dumfriesshire, Scotland.

Across the Place d'Armes is the Basilica Notre Dame.

The first things I see on stepping outside is the tower at which Kingston's undesirables would meet their end. A constant reminder that Kingstonians do not tolerate felonious behaviour.

This is an area not far from where I live. The village was founded in 1784, and began to grow after the penitentiary arrived. It was the location for the sailing events in the 1976 Olympics.

Starting at the iconic Grant Hall, built in 1905, now used for lectures, concerts, exams, and ceremonies, etc

Summerhill is the oldest building at Queen's, dating to 1839. Originally built as a private residence, it was bought by the university in 1853, at which point it could contain the whole university! Since the 1860s it has been the official residence of the Principal.

My first three days in Kingston have been spent running around after all manner of forms, numbers, courses, people, signatures, and most of all, places to live! Having got to the weekend in one piece, I am finally feeling like things might be under control: I seem to have found a nice apartment not far from the university, my supervisor appears to be happy with the courses I've chosen, and all the other practicalities are under control.
